Hayden AI Applauds USDOT for National Roadway Safety Strategy

While the number of annual roadway fatalities declined and plateaued over the last few years, there has been a spike in fatalities during the pandemic. The Early Estimate of Motor Vehicle Traffic Fatalities for the First Half (January-June) of 2021 report published by the USDOT’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimated that the number of traffic fatalities in the first 6 months of 2021 increased by 18.4 percent compared to the first half of 2020, and nearly 40,000 people died in motor vehicle traffic crashes in 2020.

In response to this development, USDOT Secretary Pete Buttigieg last week announced the release of the NRSS, which aims to reduce traffic fatalities and serious injuries systematically. The NRSS recognizes the need for coordination across all sectors and encourages the adoption of new technologies to improve roadway safety. It also recognizes the inextricable link between traffic enforcement and Biden-Harris Administration’s equity and climate goals.
